Syrian Kurds push deeper into IS militant group territory

DAMASCUS | Kurdish-led forces advanced on Monday deep into territory in Syria held by IS militant group, showing new momentum after they unexpectedly swiftly seized a border crossing from the militants last week.
The Kurds, aided by US-led air strikes and smaller Syrian rebel groups, have pushed to within 7km (4 miles) of Ain Issa, a town 50km (30 miles) north of IS's de facto capital Raqqa city, said Redur Xelil, spokesman for the Kurdish forces.

World Heritage Committee condemns destruction of Mali sites

NEW YORK |  The World Heritage Committee has condemned the destruction of sites in Mali – including in the fabled city of Timbuktu – and decided on measures to help the West African country protect its heritage, including the creation of a special fund to help it conserve its cultural heritage.



S. Korea Rejects Int’l Mediation in Island Dispute with Japan

SOUTH KOREA |South Korea has dismissed a proposal by Japan to take a long-running dispute over a group of islands to the International Court of Justice.Seoul's Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan said Tuesday the offer was “not worth considering,” and urged Japan to drop its claim to the islands.Earlier, Japan's Cabinet said it would formally ask South Korea to jointly seek a resolution at the Hague-based ICJ. Unless both sides agree, the ICJ cannot open a case on the matter




Bodies of Turkish jet crew shot down by Syria found

ANKARA | The bodies of the crew members of a Turkish jet shot down by Syria last month have been found.Turkey's TRT television said the two airmen were found on the Eastern Mediterranean seabed by a US deep-sea exploration vessel, according to AP.The F-4 Phantom jet was shot down on 22 June after Syrian authorities claimed it had violated their airspace, a claim disputed by Turkey.

Libya holds 32 'Gaddafi loyalists' over Tripoli attack

TRIPOLI | The Libyan authorities say they have arrested 32 members of a network loyal to former leader Muammar Gaddafi in connection with Sunday's twin car bombing in the capital, Tripoli. Two people were killed by the two blasts near the former military academy for women and the interior ministry. An official of Libya's top security body said the network had been linked to the bombs. It was the first deadly bomb attack since Gaddafi's overthrow last year.

Bomb Blast Kills 7 in Southeastern Turkey

ANKARA | At least seven people have been killed in a car bomb explosion in southeastern Turkey.  Police say the bomb occurred Monday night in the town of Gaziantep, near the country's border with Syria. Dozens were wounded in the blast, which set several vehicles on fire. Rebels from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) are active in Turkey's Kurdish-majority southeast.

Afghan Rockets Damage US Military Chief's Plane

KABUL | NATO officials say Afghan militants fired rockets on a U.S. airbase in Afghanistan, damaging a plane used by America's top military officer. A spokeswoman tells VOA U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman General Martin Dempsey was in his room and "nowhere near" the aircraft when two rockets landed near it early Tuesday at Bagram Airbase.  He later left the base in another plane.
